The Irish
There’s always something happening at The Irish
The Irish was established in 1835 at a time when Melbourne town was still in its infancy. Emancipated convict Josiah Pitcher decided to share his passion for wine and ale with Launceston, and named his establishment The Hibernia Hotel, after the Latin name for the island of Ireland and the vessel on which he was transported to serve out a life sentence for felony. Mr Pitcher introduced a legacy which still continues more than 170 years later. Now a famous Launceston institution, The Irish pays homage to our city’s historical and colonial past and, in particular, Tasmania’s Irish connection.
These days The Irish serves up delicious Australian and Irish cuisine alongside their extensive range of beers, wines, ciders and spirits. There is also live music every night, and themed events taking place throughout the year - definitely take a look at their website and socials for all the details on that!
