The term ‘long-standing’ evokes pride, respect, and a sense of responsibility—qualities that Capri on St John Street has embodied for an impressive 71 years.
Michelle Clark is the third owner and Director of Capri. As I sit down to interview her, it is evident that this is a role she approaches with great care and dedication. “It’s an iconic business,” Michelle says. “It’s not just any business; it’s been here for over seventy years, and I’m only the third owner, so I think that says a lot about just how amazing it is!”
Originally from a hospitality background, Michelle reflects on the learning curve she encountered when transitioning into retail. “My passion still lies in hospitality, but I loved working here so much, and the team were amazing. I thought, well, maybe I could step into retail! Then it just happened, and I’m still here, 17 years on.”
When asked about Launceston during her early days at Capri, Michelle shares her thoughts on the city’s evolving landscape and the challenges of running a local business. “I remember when Medicare was just down the street. Women would make an outing of their appointments, stopping by for bra fittings. When Medicare moved, we noticed a significant decline in foot traffic,” she explains. Despite such challenges, Capri has adapted and thrived, proving itself as a cornerstone of connection and generational impact.
“It’s very rewarding,” says Michelle. “We have customers who come in monthly and love the experience of being fitted. Some shopped here when they were pregnant with their first baby, and now, years on, they’re bringing their daughters in for their first bra fitting!”
Michelle speaks warmly about the support Capri has received from the local business community over the years. “The special thing about Launceston retailers is that we all endeavour to support each other. We shop in each other’s stores and recommend one another to shoppers. I’ll tell people, ‘go to Watsons for a beautiful ring’ or ‘head to Neill Pitts for a suit’. We like to support each other, and we’ll always send shoppers to other local Launnie businesses.”
When discussing the future of Capri, Michelle expresses a hope for a resurgence in in-person shopping. With more people turning to online sales, she hopes shoppers will rediscover the joy of a personal experience. “I would love it if things could go back a little to how they were—when people would walk in, have a conversation, share a laugh about their weekend, and enjoy a chit-chat as they shop.”
A brand that prioritises making its customers feel valued, Capri stands out for its personalised service. Michelle believes this is what keeps people coming back. “My staff and I love what we do. We love getting to know our customers and hearing their stories. It’s so rewarding seeing women leave feeling good about themselves. Buying lingerie is highly personal. You need to know what to say, how to make others feel comfortable, and when to be respectful. This is something I feel my staff and I do very well.”
Michelle’s favourite part of owning and working at Capri is the impact she and her team have on their customers. “It’s such a rewarding business. I’ve helped many people who haven’t been fitted before. After a fitting with us, they often tell us they can’t believe how comfortable they feel—and how much joy it brings!”
Reflecting on Launceston’s future, Michelle praises the City’s efforts to beautify its outdoor spaces. “Launceston is a beautiful place, and it’s important we keep working together to make it even better,” She says. “It’s exciting to see the new outdoor dining areas and plants on George Street. Every one of us with a business here has a responsibility to get involved and help improve the little things. I can see that happening, and that excites me.”
Thank you, Michelle, for your insights and for contributing so much to Launceston for so long. Capri’s legacy and your dedication ensure it remains a treasured part of the community.
