Kawan Dining

A joyful dining experience that celebrates the bold flavours of Southeast Asia

Kawan Dining is a modern Southeast Asian restaurant created by Chef Efendi and his wife. Growing up surrounded by the vibrant street food culture of his childhood, he learned early on that food is about more than just eating — it’s about bringing people together. Afternoons spent at his grandparents’ house were full of laughter, stories, and bold, comforting flavours. That warm, familial spirit is the first thing you notice at Kawan, and it stays with you throughout your dining experience.

Before making Launceston his permanent home in 2019, Efendi honed his culinary skills at some of Australia’s best modern Asian kitchens, including China Diner (formerly part of the China Doll group) and Melbourne's renowned Longrain. But coming to Tasmania and working under Don Cameron at Mudbar Restaurant was a turning point — not just for his cooking, but for how he sees community and connection. Launnie's welcoming spirit inspired him and his wife to open their own restaurant. “Kawan” means “friend” — and that’s exactly what Kawan Dining aims to be: warm, welcoming, and full of passion for great food and good company.

WHY WE LOVE IT

1. The atmosphere is vibrant and cosy, a comfortable setting for large groups and small families alike.

2. Chef Efendi's extensive culinary experience both in Tassie and beyond clearly inform the focused and inventive menu.

3. The husband and wife duo behind Kawan are exceptional hosts, and everyone will feel like a friend, even on their first visit.
