Cataract Gorge Reserve Cliff Grounds

We are so lucky to have The Cataract Gorge Reserve so close to our beautiful city. This 65 million year old gorge is shaded by bushland on both sides, and houses the world's longest single span chairlift. The natural history of the gorge, along the South Esk River, stretches back tens of millions of years. And as a significant site for the palawa, the Tasmanian Aboriginal people, its human history is long and rich, too. Early historical records show settlers in awe of the natural rugged beauty of the gorge, and this sentiment echoes through to visitors and locals alike in the current day.

The Cliff Grounds features a Victorian garden with historical rotunda, children's play space, restaurant and kiosk. The shady northern side of the Gorge is abundant with wildlife and home to peacocks, wallabies, pademelons and many more. Walking tracks link to the Cliff Grounds, including a path to the chairlift station. The Cliff Grounds car park is accessed by Gorge Road through Trevallyn.

WHY WE LOVE IT:

  • An absolute must-visit for tourists - the Cataract Gorge is a stunning piece of urban wilderness only minutes from the city centre
  • Great place to take the family
  • Plenty of shade to enjoy on hot summer days
  • Access to the basin swimming pool, eateries and scenic chair lift
