Making Space: In conversation with Alastair Mooney
Join us for our next floor talk at the Art Gallery at Royal Park as we explore the work of Alaistair Mooney within the exhibition Making Space.
Alastair will share highlights of his woodworking craft, alongside his individual journey as an artist with QVMAG Curator, Ashley Bird.
ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
The practice of carving into any material is one of the earliest foundational skills of sculpture.
From the awe-inspiring figures of the renaissance to the satisfaction of carving a spoon or small animal, the practice of carving allows the carver to find magic in the art of subtraction and removal.
This exhibition will take visitors on a trip into this art form through works that display skill and artistry.
The exhibition features pieces from the QVMAG collection alongside examples of contemporary carving practice, that will leave you amazed at how raw materials can be transformed with simple tools and a lot of imagination.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Alastair Mooney received his BFA from the Victorian College of the Arts in 2009 and currently resides in Tasmania.
His work reflects a powerful passion to create and communicate; using his practice as a tool to explore and understand the human experience.
Mooney's work utilises inherently beautiful and quality materials often combined with large scales, intricate textures and dimensionality to translate products of the imagination into physical manifestation.
