Launceston Historical Society November Talk
With guest speakers Darren Watton & John Dent
Perth Gaol Archaeological Dig
Join us as we delve into the intriguing history of the Old Perth Gaol, which dates back to 1829 when bushrangers were held captive before being transported to Launceston. Located near the Perth Convict Station, its position posed challenges for constables and felons who relied on an unreliable ferry to cross the South Esk River. The gaol remained operational until 1842, when a new Watch House was constructed in town.
This community dig, conducted by the Launceston Historical Society Archaeology Group, uncovered a trove of artifacts, including nails, buttons, pipes, glass, ceramics, and even jewelry. Discover the findings, insights, and mysteries of the site during this captivating talk.
Speakers:
- Darren Watton: An experienced archaeologist with Southern Archaeology, specializing in historical research and heritage management.
- John Dent: President of multiple historical societies, a published author on northern Tasmanian history, and an OAM recipient for his contributions to heritage
