Julian Burgess Lecture on St John's, Launceston's First Church
A lecture presented by the Launceston Historical Society
St John’s Church, Launceston’s oldest public building, has marked more than 200 years at the centre of the city’s history. The foundation stone was laid in 1824, and the first divine service was held in the nearly completed building on 16 December 1825.
It became the mother church of northern Tasmania. The clock in its tower served as the town clock for more than 80 years and it was the birthplace of the Launceston Church Grammar School.
Julian Burgess is a retired journalist and former Associate Editor of the Examiner newspaper in Launceston. He has written hundreds of articles and more than a dozen books and has captured this story in a new history commissioned for the church’s bicentenary.
Join us for this lecture on Sunday 21 June, in the Meeting Room of Queen Victoria Museum, Inveresk. All welcome. Admission is free for LHS members; $5 for visitors.
