In the heart of Launceston’s ever-evolving business landscape, Phil Hughes Office Solutions stands as a testament to resilience, adaptability, and deep community ties. From its beginnings in the 1990s to its current role as a leader in office technology and solutions, this local institution has weathered industry shifts, economic changes, and technological revolutions—all while staying true to its core values.
In 1997, when his role at Northern Business Machines came to an end, Phil Hughes took a leap of faith and launched Phil Hughes Office Solutions.
Ryan Hughes, Phil’s son and now General Manager, recalls the moment vividly. “I was 14, about to go to my school footy match, and we were just about to go on our first ever family holiday out of Tasmania. Then Dad lost his job. It was a moment of panic, but also a moment of opportunity.”
Over the years, the business expanded beyond the sales and service of office machines, eventually adding stationery, furniture, and digital signage to its offerings.
Ryan has watched Launceston evolve, recalling childhood memories of a very different cityscape. “There used to be a fountain at Village Cinemas, and the mall had a wooden playground that was an OH&S disaster,” he laughs. “There was so much community spirit that a walk across town could take 45 minutes because you’d stop and chat with everyone.”
“Launceston has changed a lot, especially The Avenue, but it still holds onto its charm. I love Launnie, it’s my city.”
The Launceston community has played a significant role in the company’s longevity. “People here don’t love big business. They prefer to support locals, and that’s worked in our favour,” Ryan explains. “We’ve always prioritised paying our local suppliers first. If we can source something locally, we do.”
He sees this local-first mentality as vital. “Every small business does its bit to support the economy here. If you have the option to buy from a local business instead of a national chain, you should take it. It keeps the money flowing within Tasmania.”
Over the years, Phil Hughes Office Solutions has embraced change. In 2005, the business expanded into stationery, and in 2015, it ventured into office furniture. The biggest pivot came in recent years, with a focus on digital signage, a passion project for Ryan. The company is now a leading partner with Fusion Signage and has become the third-largest distributor in Australia.
During COVID-19, the business underwent a significant transformation. “We realised that retail wasn’t our strength,” Ryan says. “Businesses don’t want to think about office solutions, they just want their problem solved. That’s where we come in.”
The company shut down its Brisbane Street storefront and consolidated operations into a newly acquired warehouse, making it their headquarters. This shift allowed them to streamline operations and focus on larger, more strategic solutions for their clients.
Beyond providing stationery and office equipment, the business prides itself on offering larger solutions that help other businesses grow. “We don’t just sell products. We help people understand how technology can enhance their business,” Ryan explains. “We love seeing businesses evolve and being a part of that journey.”
The business thrives on collaboration. “In Launceston, business is done through relationships,” Ryan says. “There are three or four of us who regularly refer clients to each other. It’s about creating a network where everyone benefits.”
Running a business for decades comes with challenges, but each obstacle has only strengthened Phil Hughes Office Solutions. “The statistics aren’t great for small businesses surviving long-term,” Ryan admits. “But we’re still here because we’ve adapted and worked hard.”
He credits referrals as a key driver of success. “Word of mouth is huge in Launceston. If you do a good job, people will tell others, and that positivity keeps customers coming back.”
Phil Hughes Office Solutions isn’t slowing down. “The future is digital,” Ryan says. “We’re moving more into tech solutions, digital signage, and interactive displays. It’s about staying ahead of the curve.”
For those looking to start a business in Launceston, Ryan offers simple advice: “Build relationships. Launnie will give you a crack if you’re genuine. And listen to feedback, even negative feedback helps you improve.”
For Ryan, being a Launnie Long-stander is about legacy. “It’s something my family is incredibly proud of. My father built this business from nothing, and to still be standing after all these years is a testament to his hard work and the trust our community has in us.”
With a foundation built on trust, resilience, and a deep connection to Launceston, Phil Hughes Office Solutions continues to evolve, proving that adaptability and strong community ties are the key to long-term success.
