QVMAG Friends: Simon Ancher Studio

Our people, their stories: oral histories of Northern Tasmania

The eponymous Simon Ancher Studio, designer-makers of fine furniture, from their Launceston workshop, exploring 'The Human Scale'

Simon Ancher is a designer-maker based in Invermay, Launceston Tasmania. Having studied furniture design and Environmental Design, Simon became the Program Director of Furniture Design for the UTAS School of Architecture & Design, Launceston, and a significant figure in the Tasmanian fine wood furniture scene with pieces collected and commissioned nationally and internationally.

In this presentation which has been titled ‘The Human Scale’, Simon will talk about the journey and evolution of the studio, the challenges and successes of maintaining a fine furniture practise in Tasmania. The studio is very much a team effort with Lisa who Simon credits as ‘the driving force behind shaping the look of the space and skilfully coordinating other Australian-designed objects that complement my work.’ Tasmania being home to many exceptional designer‑makers, beautiful, handcrafted pieces—both small and large—are also being showcased alongside locally produced food, wine, and craft drinks, creating a genuinely authentic aesthetic for the island state.

Ancher’s use of materials—especially Tasmanian timber—highlights their unique qualities through careful, thoughtful observation, not only to the material itself but to the spirit of the place it comes from, using skill and a range of techniques to bring those qualities to life.

The presentation will wrap up with a look at SAS current projects and their vision for the future, as they continue to develop their original furniture range and undertake public projects, including commissions for seating and art spaces, to which the human scale applies, absolutely.

Presented by QVMAG Friends. Tickets available at link.
